Aesthetics – Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Abu Dhabi

We dropped by here on our way back from Saadiyat Island to Dubai in the summer of 2022. It was one of the main ‘must-see’ in Abu Dhabi obviously, and am glad we did. It’s hard to find something in the UAE that belongs to the region’s heritage. So much of it is borrowed and embellished. But there was something fiercely independent about this construction. I admired it from every angle and loved watching how it stood sturdily against the piercing sun, every angle was superbly choreographed with a story and symmetry that seemed sincerely of its own spiritual story, and not a flamboyant imitation of another.
