Travel Anecdotes – Sufra, Amman

We’ve dined twice in this extremely popular restaurant in Amman and a visit is a must at least for its rustic ambiance. It was also featured in MENA’s 50 Best Restaurants so it’s always recommended for Amman newbies.

We had a meal together last winter and were seated inside, and another time with friends during peak summer where we were able to enjoy the beautiful outdoor terrace. One of Sufra’s selling points is the location and set up- it’s in a quaint, charming villa on Rainbow Street which is a fun street of shopping, cafes and restaurants. So a great place to end up in after an afternoon of browsing through souvenir stores and artisan shops.

The food is meant to showcase authentic Jordanian home cooking. I am partial to middle eastern cuisine and enjoyed most of the dishes. I hesitate to deem it spectacular – only because my threshold is a little peculiar- if the sucuk sausages did not transport me into a foodgasm, I can’t give it a full 5 stars and this time it didn’t though it was decent.

The mamdatory hummous
Sucuk sausages and kibbeh
My favourite dishes were the baba ganush and Sufra salad
Mixed grill of lamb and chicken
Beautiful terrace view
Entrance to the backyard terrace
Indoor dining section

Come for the atmosphere, the taste of Jordanian cooking and the beautiful villa. Over the summer and with dear friends, conversation won’t run dry and good memories collected.

  1. Wow.. a great post on food.. 🙂 The hummus looks tempting, as does the grilled kebab and salad.. Middle Eastern foods have a melange of flavours packed in one.. The ambience of the restaurant looks good, though I believe it would have looked better at night.. Thank you for sharing.. 🙂

  2. I did not get to explore Amman much, and part of my regret from not exploring the city as I should have is the amazing food and restaurants. I’d be happy with just a culinary tour of the city 🙂 I did enjoy my short stay in As-Salt, and do plan to spend more time there on my next visit. Cheers to your travels and adventures.

    1. Amman may not necessarily be the most dynamic city in the region but it has its own character 🤭 I do recommend these few restaurants – Sufra, Beirut (Lebanese but unforgettable sucuk), Alee (contemporary meets traditional Jordanian cuisine), and Jordan River Foundation for brunch. We spent five months eating hummous, baba ganoush, muttabal and flatbread…. it was lovely ☺️ Really hope you get to come back!
