Reflections on the Present

We are always chasing tomorrow, re-considering the past. Pending our satisfaction on a moment in the future, when we finally get to a place, or position, or be with a person we believe could somehow elevate us. Wondering of steps taken in the past, worrying about our condition in the years to come.

My present ethos is to really try to embrace what is with us at any given moment. It can seem so easy to do but takes Herculean superpower. To step away from the temptation to not overthink and let the What If boogeymen enter the window of reflection. Or to intentionally distract one’s self so to avoid really sitting with one’s thoughts.

On a recent bus journey between two countries, I experimented with switching of all my online devices except a playlist of mellow songs, reclining on my seat and letting my heartbeat synthesise with nothing else but lyrics and melodies. The serenity didn’t last for the whole trip but enough to realise that staying in a present moment can be as replenishing as an aromtherapy massage. As Rumi said ‘let go of your cup of yesterday so you may drink the glory of this moment’.
